Sorry to say it but you’re being lied to. We all are. When it comes to making money, some will go to great lengths to sell a certain product. This is particularly true in the health food industry. All over, you can find examples of foods that marketers label as “healthy” but they are anything but. So, to help you avoid this, here are 10 healthy foods that are actually bad for you.
1. OATMEAL PRODUCTS ARE NOT HEALTHY FOODS
Of course, not all oats are bad. Real oatmeal that takes 20 minutes or so to cook on the stove is actually quite healthy for you. However, watch out for the instant kind. Instant oatmeal has unnatural preservatives and often times, added sugar.
2. BREAD PRODUCTS ARE NOT HEALTHY FOODS
Most bread products you see on the market are unhealthy. If you really must indulge, look at the ingredients list. The first ingredient should be whole wheat flour, followed by natural ingredients. If you really want to step up your game, opt for organic or sprouted grain bread.
3. STORE BOUGHT JUICES ARE NOT HEALTHY FOODS
If you’re a juice addict, invest in a blender. Most of the store bought juices have extra sugar and preservatives. Make juices at home to get the most nutritional value.
4. ENERGY BARS ARE NOT HEALTHY FOODS
There are countless energy bars on the market. However, most of them are horrible for you. In addition to being chock full of sugar and weird ingredients, energy bars don’t even have much energy. You’re better off going for a Snickers bar.
5. TRAIL MIXTURES ARE NOT HEALTHY FOODS
For some reason, trail mix is considered a healthy food by many. Sure, if you’re sticking to just nuts and berries, then yes, trail mix is great. However, nowadays you find trail mix that’s essentially candy with a few nuts thrown in.
6. CEREAL IS NOT HEALTHY
Cereal is yet another food that people think is healthy. Since marketers still love to label this breakfast food as healthy, it’s hard to shake off that image. It’s not, though, people. In most cases, you’re eating sugary bread with milk.
7. PACKAGED DIET FOODS
After all, it says “diet” right on the label, right? Shouldn’t it be healthy? Wrong. It’s not. Just another lie from corporate to separate you from your hard-earned cash.
8. MUFFINS ARE HORRIBLE FOR YOU
Kind of like cereal, muffins are just soft, chewy balls of sugar. Sure, those labeled “whole grain” or “blueberry” might be a little healthier. However, there are far better options one can choose from.
9. AGAVE NECTAR IS JUST SUGAR
Since the agave craze took off, people are worshipping this “natural” sugar as the next best thing. However, once it breaks down in your body, it’s essentially just high-fructose corn syrup, which is not that good for you.
10. FROZEN YOGURT
You know all those “froyo” places popping up in your hometown? Well, they aren’t healthy. While there are plenty of healthy yogurt options out there (greek, coconut, etc.), frozen yogurt is not one of them. Furthermore, any yogurt with added fruits and sugar should certainly be avoided.
