Happiness is one of the most popular subjects. Yet it is also one of the most elusive aspects of life. Perhaps it is because happiness is so abstract that people do not really understand how to pursue it. But every individual, surely, has at least one memory associated with happiness. Happiness occurs when you forget everything and find yourself in a state of euphoria.
Statistics show that people largely associate happiness with material possessions. Most people think that they will become happy when they get married in Las Vegas, or after they fly a private jet. However, if you try to recall the times when you were truly happy, you will probably have something other than money in mind. In this post, I am going to share my thoughts on how to be happy.
How to Be Happy: Live in the Moment
In my opinion, people are often unhappy because they are thinking of what they do not have and the next goal. It could be the next business deal, the next million, the next partner, or the next day. As soon as they hit one target, they shift their focus towards the next one. Many folks are under constant pressure to do something. Sometimes, it is better to stop for a moment, look around, and simply enjoy your life. You cannot be happy when your mind is laden with thoughts and worries about the future. Thus, take a break and in other words let your hair down.
How to be Happy: Work Hard
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how much you have achieved. It can feel gratifying when you get home knowing that you did the best you could. You often find yourself unhappy when you cannot make your dreams come true. However, putting your best foot forward increases your self-satisfaction. You are happy with yourself and can be motivated to work even harder the next day.
How to be Happy: Accept Your Weaknesses
One of the more common causes of unhappiness is when folks focus too much on their shortcomings. It can become less of a problem once you learn to accept your weaknesses. Nobody’s perfect. Accept your weaknesses and learn to feel happy with yourself.
How to be Happy: Be True to Yourself
Life is simply the process of finding yourself. When you live your life seeking to please other people, you are not living. You cannot be fully happy only when you seek to please other people by helping them achieve their dreams. To be happy, you must define things that are truly meaningful to you and pursue them.
How to be Happy: Get out of Your Comfort Zone
It can be tempting to be stuck in the same place, benchmark yourself against mediocre standards, and accept mediocrity as your fate. However, you will never know what could have happened if you gave it a little more and aimed a bit higher. Challenge yourself once in a while and make sure to have a goal. You might apply for a promotion you do not really need, or you might help someone you do not know. You will be surprised at just how gratifying it can be, once you realize that you can do more than you thought you could.
How to be Happy: Be Grateful for What you Have
It might be hard to pat yourself on the back or be full of gratitude in the midst of a crisis or a slow performance. But it is necessary. It doesn’t mean that should slacken in your pursuits or be less ambitious. The assumption here is that you are doing everything possible to reach your goals, but you are not there yet.
How to be Happy: Compete Against Yourself Only
Your sole pursuit in life should be becoming a better person with each passing day. If you focus on other people, you will most likely be dissatisfied with your life. It’s because you will believe that there is someone out there who is better than you at one thing or the other. Just set your targets and go after them with every ounce of strength that you have. If you do not succeed one time, take lessons from it and come out of it stronger, ready for another go.
How to be Happy: Meet New People
This is not a suggestion for the weak hearted since you will meet people who are mean and cruel, trying to tear you down. However, this is only a reflection of their own insecurities and proof that you could be worse off. Beside bad individuals, you will have a chance to meet people who are nice and kind, those who will take notice of all your positive aspects. This perspective is important for self-assurance and a bigger sense of fulfillment.
